Get Nude

The Smokey Eye has reigned supreme for longer than I can count. This season however, is quite different. We are not taking things so seriously. I think we all have the attitude "It is what it is" to quote my Dad. The runways were full of fresh-clean faces painted with just a touch of muted shades and nude hues on nude. I think this is a breath of fresh air, but I will admit to still rocking the smokey eye. What stands out the most for going "nude" is carefully contouring the cheeks. This is the difference between looking like you rolled out of bed. This is NOT the same trend as in the 90's when everyone was wearing too light pancake foundations (and layered no less). Today's nudes are not limited to only certain shades like beige.

You can achieve Spring's fresh look in many different ways. You can deepen the natural shade of your lips, use bronzer instead of blush, or apply sheer nude lipstick. I would still apply mascara as usual as well as lightly lining your eyes in a soft brown. Highlighters can add a nice soft glow to this look.

Revlon has a chic sheer nude lipstick called Soft Nude for $8.99.

Sexy Valentine

Tomorrow is February 1st. Finally. Almost there warm weather. Speaking of February, that sweet-seductive holiday is fast approaching: St. Valentine's Day. You either love it or hate it. Hopefully you are not in the latter category and are insisting to look like a million bucks (but for much less, right darlings?) and get a visit from cupid. Trends for Spring 2010 are full of come-hither classic genre of lingerie dressing, not made for just the bedroom-perfect for Valentine's Day, don't you think? When wearing such delicate garments balance is needed. Chunky statement baubles and jewels are essential so you do not look like a call-girl. Also, pay attention to proportion. Short shorts or skirts call for loose, full coverage tops and vice versa. You do not have to go full on boudoir-inspired dressing or just a peeking of a lace bra; go for what your comfortable with.

Forever 21 has a beautiful pink and black polka dot corset with garter belt ($18) that can be paired with a blazer and black pants or even a pencil skirt. Simply Vera Wang found at Kohls has very nice lingerie inspired tops in pastel colors, not to mention, is made with sequins and silk. Talk about sexy. Her stuff is a little more pricey, but check clearance racks. I got a Vera brocade shell for $6. H&M has awesome corset dresses in nude, blush, and tan for only $40. Think of how sexy that would look with a nice spray tan (only $10 at L.A. Tan on Mondays, sweet deal ladies!) and some chunky statement jewelry. I am sure he will be your Valentine then!

This trend looks fabulous and fresh with a red pout and soft-touchable waves. Keep the eyes minimal to just some liner and mascara. Don't forget to have a nice rosy glow.

Stick around. More sexy Valentine attire to come.

Check It Out!

Rachel Zoe (celeb stylist) has "(the Not So) Basic Guide" on rachelzoe.com. This is a shopping guide to create stylish outfits through the basic essentials (i.e. blue prints; like blue print on a house). These are the key pieces Rachel encourages, that will pull together any outfit and still have a little bit of sheen.

How To...

What do you do when you get pen or ink on one of your favorite shirts or pair of pants? This recently happened to me. In between clients, rushing about with my special red pen, I swiped it across the bottom of my white ruffle blouse from Forever 21. I freaked. The fabric is delicate so I did not want to run to the bathroom with anxiety in hand. I decided to wait until I got home.

From the grapevine, I found out how to make my beloved blouse look like new. Take a few hints from me: Glycerin.

Check the tag right off the bat. Glycerin will only remove the ink on washable fabrics. Place a clean cloth underneath the stain, inside the garment, to prevent any seepage.

Next, dip a cotton swab into the glycerin (not too much you just need a little). Rub carefully on the stain for a couple of minutes.

Last, mix a few drops of Woolite with a small amount of water. Apply the mixture to the stain with a fresh cotton ball until a lather forms, then wash the item in cold water.

Bravo! Good as new. You can find glycerin at most stores for around $2.

Street Style

What is everyone wearing these days? Well, in Milan after the mens' fashion shows, many were sporting bunny ear heads a la Louis Vuitton. On a more realistic note, the chicer few were seen in green on green (military inspired coats and Hermes Kelly bags). Many ditched heavy winter wear for sweater coats and chunky knits in black, blond camel, and gray. The descendants of the Gods added pops of color in their dark pallets. Seen tons of leather jackets and military peacoats. Not to mention lots of fur (um, Hello! This is Milan we are talking about!). Don't forget wide-leg trousers, barrets, blue on blue (blouses and chunky cashmere scarves), and tons of mixing patterns. Take a hint from these glamorous Italians, they are not trying too hard, but yet look impeccable.

What have you seen on the Street lately?

"We cannot tell the precise moment when friendship is formed. As in filling drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over, so in a series of kindness there is at last one which makes the heart run over."

Hello, Tina Chow!

The 80's have been back, as scary it is to admit. Honestly, the trend is not bad at all. I have to say, I have come to love the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 80's revival. I do have a favorite for work: mixing black, white, and red structured pieces. I think it screams confidence and fabulousness. I need that in my line of work. How to work this trend for your 9 to 5 is by making sure you have a few key pieces:

A pair of patent peep-toe heels

Crisp white boyfriend blazer

Leather black and gold croc clutch

Belted one-shoulder dress (yes it does have a sleeve)

Rolled-up trousers (herringbone or tweed are perfect)

Sequined wool vest

Collar necklace

Grandpa cardigan

Big resin bangles

How to Style:

The white blazer will look striking with a black camisole, the rolled up trousers, peep-toes, and collar necklace (make sure the color of the necklace has pops of red in it). Tie it together with the leather black and gold clutch.

Dress up the grandpa cardigan with black leggings, a white lace blouse or cami, slouchy boots, and layered black and red resin bangles. If you have a little pouch around your mind-section that you feel uncomfortable about, I would cinch the waist with a skinny black belt (you're doing this over the grandpa cardigan). That way it creates a the illusion of a small waist.

The one shoulder dress speaks for its self. Pair it singularly with peep-toes, resin bangles, and clutch. If you are feeling chilly, throw the white blazer over it.

The sequin vest would look great over a black and white blouse, with rolled-up trousers, and leather clutch. Don't forget your heels!

Let's Travel

I do a lot of traveling back and forth from Chicago. I think it is extremely important to have a few stylish and must-have items whenever I hit the road.

First off, everyone who is anyone needs a duffel bag. If you are traveling a lot, a duffel will hold up to the abuse of being tossed around, stuffed to the brim, scratched, spilled on, possibly even torn. My best advice is to go with a wool duffel bag that has leather trim. You may have to drop a pretty penny, but this is will be with you, no doubt, for over a decade.

You need comfortable shoes, such as ballet flats, slouchy boots, or Birkenstocks. This is perfect when you have to run down to the lobby of a hotel, out to the car, or when you're crammed in the coach section of the drafty plane. You never know who you will see or meet (that's why you do not want to look homeless!).

Scarves are essential even if it is summer. Climate change is drastic from car to hotel or plane to outside. Not to mention, a fabulous print scarf can make any boring jeans and tee look chic and "now".

A pillow mist is such a nice touch when you are unable to sleep in your own bed. I love Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Sleep collection. It has lavender notes to help ease into a peaceful slumber. Works every time.

This is my ultimate essential: Burt Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream. This smells fantastic, is natural, is nice as a lip balm, cuticle cream (duh), getting rid of those dry spots, quick fix for fly-a-ways or frizz, and did I mention it is no bigger than the size of your palm? More room for clothes, hey!

The trick is when you travel, to look cute and be comfortable no matter the form of transportation.

Lush Lips

CoverGirl's new ShineBlast lip gloss is amazing. I recently purchased Fire, which is a beautiful red-coral hue. The shimmer and shine made my lips look delicious! CoverGirl claims that the lip sculpting applicator "hugs the curves of your lips" which will give you that "make-up artist" inspired look. I think that the applicator just made it easier to apply and less messy (the gloss wasn't sliding down my face). It was not too thick or too sticky. This lip gloss can be used for day and evening looks. Will work even at the office.
Test it out and let me know what you think!

Wishing for Excitement

Gosh, do I hate being couped up in the country. I need some excitement! I am wishing for a party, a wedding, something! Anything-anything to wear something absolutely stunning. I want breathtaking! I want to wear a silver/gold ombre sequined draped halter gown that has a amazing cinched waist just like Jean Paul Gaultier Fall Couture 2009 Runway Show. Even the purple silk floor length coat with a black fox fur trim around the collar and cuffs I would settle for. With all this talk of getting out of the house for a night on the town (or hopefully a move back for me), what do you wear for your debut? This is a very important detail because people haven't seen you in a while, and you are bound to impress, right?

Well, then we need strong and ultra chic details. I think the best bet would be a dress and a fabulous coat. Here are some suggestions I think will turn heads right when you walk into any room:

Chiffon dress with velvet triangular pattern

One sleeve jersey black dress

Shift pattern dress with a long coat and layered necklaces

Draping cowl dress in lame silver with leather elbow gloves

Gold lame dress with choppy fringe (very 20's) and a fur coat

Sequin dress (sectioned) with a toile train

Balmain like dress in pastel patterned sequins

Gown with a drop waist silk or velvet in royal blue

Corset top dress with straps and chiffon bottom dress

Flap like disco shift dress and ostrich coat (in pure white)

If you are on the curvy side go for the darker colors, especially when it's flashy. You don't want to draw attention to your "not favorite parts".

How To...

Adventures in beauty. Sometimes its a like running through a tangled jungle with unsteady hands. In simpler terms: eyeliner. No matter how still the hand is, it is so hard to keep eyeliner neat.

I have found something that really works! Rest your drawing arm on a table, vanity, or bureau top and hold your eye lid with the other. If you have some wiggly lines, smudge some powder on top to smooth out.

Top make things easy for yourself, line your lids with shadow with an eyeliner brush, which is a lot easier to control than a liquid eyeliner.

More to come! Stay tuned loves!

How To...

I am still battling with my skin. It makes you want to hide inside! But never fear, that's why make-up and smart people were invented. There are right ways to do everything. Often times when we try to cover a pimple we either apply too much or too little.
What you need to do is use a concealer that matches exactly, I mean exactly to your skin tone (this is key). Apply with a concealer brush using little brush strokes (like painting a picture). Tap area with fingers to blend.
If you applied too much foundation, just rub a dab of a light moisturizer all over your face. It will freshen your face up and make the skin look impeccable.

Big Interview By Armani Prive

Today, I had my monthly sales meeting. The best thing about the meeting was there was a dress code. Of coarse there are dress codes to meetings, but this was specific: black and white attire. We were having an "Oscars" party for the end of the fiscal year. I looked fabulous. They should have given me an award for best dressed (I wore a white ruffle blouse with a yolk collar, black strechy trouser pants, zebra peep toe oxford pumps with fish net trouser stockings, and a black bolero). This meeting got me thinking (especially since we have been holding interviews for a new consultant) about what is the best way to dress to impress in the work force. That brings me to Armani Prive Fall Couture Show 2009.

Amrani Prive is a more tailored, sophisticated, and the appropriate line for important meetings or a job interview (super important with this economy). The reason I stress dressing the part in the work force is because I had a nice girl come in for an interview with A) a pony tail on top of her head and B) a fuzzy, furry sweater thing that looked like she was thrown in a pit of cats. Scary. She did not get the job because she was "rough around the edges".

Take cue from the runway:

Suits with bow accents

Colored suits (plum or grape)

Accents of tweed, leather, silk, and velvet

Wool sweaters with ruffle lapels

Embellished trim

Patent structured bags

Pointed pumps in patent leather, two-tone, or print

Royal blue strapless shift with black bead trim

Ruffle draping (dresses and skirts)

Bow collar dress

Remember, you dress for the job you want not the one that you have. Don't go too tight or too frumpy. Make sure you're able to hug your self and that another "you" cannot fit into the outfit. Leather accessories scream power (bags, pumps, laptop carriers, briefcases, etc). Silver and pearl jewelry and hair accessories are the most chic and always appropriate.

Skin Havoc

My skin is seriously under war with itself. I don't know if my hormones are on a ultra "I hate you" kick or if it is just this damn cold weather. I am trying three (you heard right, three) new lotions to help. All are cheap and all can be found at Wal-Mart.
I have gave Aveeno the limelight before and am about to again. Their Daily Moisturizing Lotion claims that they are clinically proven to relieve dry skin and lasts for a 24-hour period. I like this one because it doesn't make my hands feel strange. ($6)
Nivea has nice smelling lotions, even when they are not suppose to be smelly. Smooth Sensation triple action lotion has ginkgo, Shea butter, and vitamin E. All vital for healing skin. Made my skin have a dewy look. ($5.50)
Jergens is known for their Ultra Healing lotion. My Mom uses this one, or at least I remember her using it at one point in time. This claims to penetrate through the skin's three layers of skin. My skin was soft, but by bedtime it was in need of some more. I think would be good for someone who has just a little bit of dry skin. ($5)

I will let you fashionistas know which wins and when my skin stops hating me!

How To...

The smokey eye has been hanging around fashion town for quite a few seasons. If you are still clueless how to achieve this sultry eye (let me guess, you tried the look and ended up looking like you were punched?) let me help you out. Often times you are using a shadow that is way too dark. You should really stick to softer shades if you're a smokey eye newbie, like brown or gray. First off, follow your lash line and sweep the color just along the rims of your eyes ending a bit past the outer corner. Next, apply a slightly lighter shade to the whole lid (yes, the entire lid), make sure to blend, and smudge past your crease. Line the bottom lid with a lighter shade and viola! No black eye! Instead, sexy-smoldering eyes! Cover Girl has the perfect grays and silver (one is matte and one is a shimmery metallic-brilliant!) and for under $8.

Tired of Being Bored

During the winter seasons it can be super easy to fall into the same dressing routine: black sweaters and black pants. Yawn!

Fall was overloaded with gorgeous trends that you can make work for you, even in the blistering cold. Why not be a lady and go for a dress or skirt? Polished and put-together pieces say "sophisticated" instead of "I am cold and lazy". Look for pencil skirts that are high waisted or draped. Pair it with a delicate blouse. Soft feminine tops plain, printed (i.e. paisley, graphics, florals, or sweet Liberty) or textured can really pull together that lady-like ensemble. As fair as a dress, go more A-line or shift.

Instead of carrying a satchel that resembles a diaper bag, why not carry something a little more luxe: a multi hued snakeskin bag, guaranteed to upscale any look. Get a little wild. Nothing warms up a winter wind like animal print. Pair it with a neutral (gray, brown, tan, etc.).

Mix in metallic with your everyday wear. Sheens of bronze, gold, silver, and other gilded hues can transpire an outfit from daytime to dressy.

Update your classic pieces (trenches, grandpa sweaters, turtlenecks) with a skinny waist belt in a contrasting or bold color. You defiantly will stand out in the sea of black.

Feminine fits are so flattering, even for going out. Fitted dresses and fun full skirts creates a lovely slimming line for any body.

When ever I play "truth or dare", I always go for "dare". I guess you can say I am the same way with my clothes. Why not? We only live once, however there is a right way to doing "daring" without looking like you belong in a side show act. The best way is to go with a architectural jackets and blazer (think Rihanna). Style it with deconstructed or skinny jeans. Clean it up with some killer heels or boots.

Gray is my favorite neutral. It brings the green out in my multi-colored blue eyes. How exciting that it is a nice variation from black (ha! and you're still in the same color family). With this color in anything, you cannot go wrong!

Venture out, my realistic glamorous fashionistas! You will be one hot snow bunny... sure to melt any heart that comes your way!

Love in Winter

Fashion Mannerisms

"Orange flame with the thought of what came next."

Winter Deals

About now, most of us are pretty sluggish. We want comfort, comfort, and more comfort. The bad part is, comfortable doesn't always mean fashionable. We are in luck! This season, flannels, fur vests, corduroy, cable knit sweaters, chunky scarves, and flat boots are pieces that are stylish and warm. I have found some really cute items that will be nice on your wallet.

Target has colorful plaid shirts for $15. Roxy does also for $40. I would check out purple, fuchsia, or red flannels.

I love faux fur vests. American Eagle ($49) and K-mart ($24) (PiperBlue) have oatmeal colored fur vests. These vests look great over a long sleeve thermal or flannels.

Wearing cropped jackets inside is okay! Especially if it looks as fabulous as the one from Charlotte Russe for $29. The jacket is a cropped bomber with a black plaid tweed material.

Cords are a nice comfortable staple for winter. This season, corduroy pants can be found in a ton of different colors. Macy's has dark green cords by Tyte for $30. Pair it with a brown woven belt.

All of these sweet-priced items are comfy, warm, and guaranteed to look great (and no one will know it's a "comfy" look!).

Shimmer, Shimmer Little Star

Shimmer and highlighter can really awaken a dull winter face. Too much of a good thing can turn sour. A heavy hand with a highlighter or shimmer can make your face look shiny. The fix: Just focus on one feature instead of your whole face. If you put too much on, dust some translucent powder on top of the shimmer to tone it down some. For the next time you want a dewy look, make sure to sweep a highlighter with a fan brush along the cheekbones and down the center of the nose. You could also try a matte eyeshadow with a sparkly lip gloss or a shimmery shadow with a matte lipstick. You get the picture.

Breaking News!

Zac Posen is the next design collaboration with Target!!! I found this out today and about died. His collection is manly dresses, but these dresses are amazing! This collection will fit every persons' unique style. He tailors to the woman who loves to dress up, but often does not have a ball to attend (So me!). The prices range from $80 and on down. The projected date for the debut is April 25th of this year. I cannot wait. I will spend my entire paycheck if I have to (sorry honey, looks like were having' Ramen Noodles for dinner for a while).

Where is My Gossip Girl?

I am missing my Monday night date with Gossip Girl. I am an avid follower. I not only love the story line and actors in the show (hello Blake Lively and Leighton Meester!), but I absolutely adore the different looks projected by each character. I lean more towards Blair, but maybe you might be a Serena or even Vanessa. In light of my aching Gossip Girl heart, I think it would be fun to channel the style of my three favorite girls: Blair, Serena, and Vanessa.

To be Queen-Bee: You know by watching the show, that Blair is always sporting a gorgeous coat or a retro hat. Entrances are everything, so that means paying attention to your outerwear. Any form of headpiece (hat, headband, barrette, etc.) is a Blair must-have.

Having it All: Miss Serena is very confident with her body. How she always shows off is with a killer pair of heels. She doesn't have to show skin all the time to be sexy.

Earth and Picture: Vanessa is very attuned to art, so its only right that she rocks a batik or ethnic prints.

Hopefully by us realistic glamour girls channeling our inner Gossip Girl will bring the new episodes to us faster.

How To...

I love trying new colors in make-up, especially lip colors. The worst thing is, that plastic packaging can make the color seem lighter than it really is. If you thought you were buying a nice soft pink, guess again, it is most likely electric mauve. The best way to try new colors is by going sheer. This way, if you want more intensity you can always layer. Rimmel (found almost at all drug stores and stores like Target, Wal-Mart, etc.) have great lipsticks in colors that are not so intense on.

Sales! Sales!

Now is the perfect time to get your hand on some staples for your winter wardrobe. I was at Sears today with my Mom and brother. All sweaters, coats, and winter essentials are 50-60% off! I found two beautiful sweaters. One was a deep marine blue off the shoulder sweater dress. It had bell sleeves, cable knitting, and an over-sized collar that extended over the shoulder. Then, there was a purple cowl neck sweater that had an interesting cable knit design across the bust. Not only was it the color purple (my fav), but it was a deep purple. Would have looked amazing with jeans, leggings, or even with a skirt. The best thing that I found (and did purchase) was a black leather jacket. Oh thinking about it gives me chills. It is a matte leather with zipper lapels and has an asymmetrical zip up. My Mom said it was "nasty". Meaning I looked like a bad ass bitch! Proceed with caution when I go out rocking this leather jacket!

A word for the wise, do not purchase an item just because it's on sale or it's a good deal. If you are having doubts on whether you would wear the item or where, do not buy it and save the money on something you will. SALES ARE LIKE EXTRA CREDIT. If you find something that fits well, is made right, and is gorgeous plus it's on sale, then it's a bonus. Otherwise, spend your money frugally on great pieces you will wear.

Make-Over Madness

I think I am in need of a new look. I recently discovered a person has been copying my current look (yes, I know imitation is the finest form of flattery, but in this case, it is not), and think that it is time for a change. I have been toying with some ideas, and would like to hear from my glamour girls.

What is your ideal make-over?

Any takers for my own new look?

Comment or email me at realisticglamour@gmail.com. Send me pics, ideas, etc.

I will for sure keep you all posted on my new look!

How To...

One of my biggest pet peeves is smudged nail polish. I cannot stand it! All that time using such delicacy and to be ruined in an instant! Now, I have learned to prevent this disagreeable moment by doing a few things. If the nail polish is still wet, brush a little cuticle oil over the smudge and lightly smooth it out with your finger. If the polish is dry, work over the smudge with a nail buffer and put a shiny top coat over it. Or, you can even just apply a matte top coat. That will disguise the smudge and your nails will still be en vogue.

Spring 2010

I am so ready for spring to come! Not just for warmer weather and the Earth to turn green again, but for the optimistic clothes of spring. The spring 2010 fashion shows have long past, but the real people of the world only think of spring when its about a month or two away. Runways were flocked with tribal prints to flak jackets to exposed brassieres. Here is the Spring 2010 Realistic Glamour Trend Report:

Many Americans want to start spring with a clean slate. Fashion's interpretation is known as "clean energy" Rediscovered less is more is hot for spring. Not to be confused with the mannish minimalism of the 1990's. Dresses are billowed and frilled. Tailoring is feminine. Also, there are cut-outs and thigh-high slits found in dresses and skirts. Even though it is minimal, there is a lot of skin shown.

Key Pieces
  • White Shirts
  • White Shirt Dresses
  • Mini Skirts and Dresses
  • Grecian Dresses
  • White Linen Suits
  • Ruffles
  • One Shoulder
  • Short Suits

Many designers took inspiration from different sports for spring. Derek Lam and Karl Lagerfeld did this trend the best, not to mention their collections were the most wearable. The inspirations came from football, skate boarding, scuba diving, and tennis. Much of the clothes have strong shoulders, pleats, and Lycra material. Think 1920's country club and 1950's leisure.

Military is huge on and off the runway for spring. The flak jacket may have replaced fall's leather bomber as the official outerwear of spring. I would look for the dressed up version.

Key Elements to the Flak Jacket

  • Green, Gray, Brown, and Khaki
  • Tie Wraps
  • Waist Belted
  • Cuffed Sleeves

Looks like designers wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the city life, because there was a huge influence of pastoral country. Raffia-embellished dresses, bell skirts (just like my favorite, Marie Antoinette), gingham, pinafore, and homespun embroideries grazed the fields (more like tents) of Bryant Park. Looking good is like having a picnic.

Key Pieces

(In nude, pastels, and white)

  • Peasant Skirts
  • Chiffon Embroidery
  • Collar Gingham Dresses
  • Cotton, Floral Print Dress
  • 40's Shapes in Chiffon Dresses

Prints are huge this season. Mixing and matching is hot. This isn't just your traditional florals, (which are beyond beautiful), but also tribal motifs to digital prints have a big impact.

Prints Found On:

  • Print Suits (shorts, carpi's, pants)
  • Pants
  • Jumpers
  • Dresses
  • Tons of Color

This is a trend to take with caution. Lingerie has trickled over to spring. You'll see exposed brassieres, tulle, and sheer fabrics. Very pretty and very sexy.

What to Wear in Public:

  • Rodarte for Target
  • Bustiers Under Suits
  • Lace
  • Corsets
  • Garters

Reports on where to find the trends at realistic prices and still look glamorous is yet to come... Stay tuned!

Sunshine Reading

I love to read books that just makes me question what I know and make me feel as if I can take on the world. I recently got my hands on two books that make me feel that way, I sure they will have the same magic for you.

Bluebird:Women and the New Psychology of Happiness (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux)
What this book is doing is looking at, for women is the question of happiness is all too often a leading on (it seems). We were taught as women to fake happiness or put on a happy face, but ultimately our happiness is ignored, no matter how much we fake it.

Becoming Jane Eyre (Sheila Kohler)
This book examines the abbreviated lives of the Bronte sisters (Charlotte, Emily, and Anne) and also of their addiction-addled brother and destitute father. It is very raw and blunt. The country mannerisms and tete-a-tete is long forgotten here.

Calming Effects

Winter is so harsh on one's skin. Have you noticed your face is dry and red? Blame lack of humidity and blasting heat. I myself is having this issue, but I did discover some remedies that have powerful little plants in them to help calm our angry skin. Aveeno, the brand that prides itself on its natural ingredients is perfect in this category. I recently tried their Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer. It has SPF 15 and is not too greasy. It calms with feverfew. You can find this at drugstores and normal "marts". It is reasonably priced.

It is super important to exfoliate, especially in the winter. The Body Shop has a Coconut Body Scrub that has oil from Samoa. This is an amazing product my skin was so smooth and it was so nourished. It sells for around $10-15.

Skin creams isn't the only way to help mad skin. Food, yes everyday food we eat, has beautifying powers. Wild Salmon is not only great for the heart, but also for the brain and skin. Salmon has potent cell-repairing protiens and omega-3 fatty acids. This replenishes barrier protecting-lipids that keep skin radiant, supple, and wrinkle free.

Beans and Lentils are legumes can help protect your face against damages. Legumes are rich in fiber and are low in sugar which help keep blemishes at bay and prevent dull, dry, wrinkled and sagged skin.

Anthocyanins, the red-blue pigments that make the beautiful color in blueberries and provide powerful antioxidant actions. When you eat blueberries you help reduce oxidative stress on the skin that causes collagen and elastin to break down. Not to mention, anti-inflammatory.

Paris

I love Paris. I love the attitude of the french and the confidence of the women. I truly enjoy the classic Paris When It Sizzles with Audrey Hepburn. She is in chic business attire almost the whole time, and one piece she wears is the collarless jacket. The modern version is cropped, boxy, and adds structure. They are suppose to be roomy to layer underneath. Collarless jackets can be worn with jeans or with a skirt- even with a shift dress looks trendy. There are so many different textures and patterns in the collarless jacket, but I found two that are perfectly cut and perfectly priced. H&M has a coral orange zippered tweed for $35. A all year piece and great for smaller figures. Spiegel has a plaid tweed collarless jacket in white, gray, and plaid. Has three buttons. Looks impeccable buttoned or kept open. This will look nice for those who are larger around the mid-section or are larger in the "girl" department. Is $89. I had a charming tweed houndsoothe collarless jacket from Marshall's that was given to me by my friend Jessica (ironically, who is also in fashion). However, it was burnt in my car fire. RIP oh collarless jacket! My quest to fill the collarless jacket gap begins!

Shopping Tips...

I am on a mission to find cute and comfortable weekend clothes that are kinda outdoorsy and fun. I am leaning more towards plaid, knits, slouchy boots, print wraps, fur boleros, skinny cords, and bucket bags. Not to mention, I am not going to spend a ton. Check out my finds:

Kmart has a wonderful Route 66 cotton-blend geometric print wrap in gray and red. Wear this over pants and a tighter layered top. No matter your size, you can look frumpy if the rest of your clothes are not form fitting ($40).

Rodarte for Target has my favorite, a bolero, not only in cream, but in faux fuzzy fur. Try it over a patterned sheer brown 3/4 sleeve top and high waisted pants. Perfect for those with short legs and long torsos. ($50, mostly on sale now, check clearance).

I love me some plaid! Especially in my favorite colors like purple or red. JC Penny has super cute motor jacket-inspired polyester blend plaid in red. This is a timeless piece that you can dress up with skinny jeans and booties or tone it down (more country) with jeans and slouchy boots. (She Said, $68).

California Dreaming...

On Such a Winter's Day...

My mind has been on warmer climates lately, but can you blame me? I have over a foot of snow, below zero temps, and a car that would be better if it was a sled. My optimistic mind has wandered to the bright and high times of 1960's California. Start with a canary yellow corduroy belted trench coat to warm up this drab January. The belted style is perfect for boyish shapes, pear shapes, and larger busts; especially if it is A-line (most are). Open your world to a glamorous vintage button front wool skirt or skinny corduroy hip-huggers in cream (amazing deal at heritage1981.com for $15!) with classic brown leather knee high boots, maybe even look for ones with a little hard ware on the calf. Girls with a rump, stick with the button-front skirt, white cords will only make your bum look like another planet. Top it off with a ladylike cotton lace blouse in cream or off-white. Possibly throw in a enamel daisy brooch or a gold locket necklace. I must have a leather everyday saddle bag to really feel like Peggy Lipton. You will not look hippie or too boho, trust me, you will give a more polished and sunny air about you.

Let me know if dreaming in California colors lightens your mood.

A Plum Mushroom in Taupe

I bet you think I have lost my marbles in my recent absence, but I promise you I have not. What the heading is referring to is the hottest new color in beauty! I just love plum/gray/pewter. This is a really versatile color. It looks great on the nails and works with all skin shades (yea for us translucent people!). OPI has a glossy and elegant neutral called Over the Taupe you can check out their website or go to Sephora. The polish is about $9, I know that seems ludicrous to pay for a nail lacquer, but OPI is high quality and has minimal chipping. Check out the eye shadows and eye liners. With the eyeliners you can layer it thickly just like normal eyeliner working it into the lashes with a liner brush. Avon's youthful brand MEETMARK has a goddess inspired creamy pencil in their Mark Mini Mark It Stick Hook Up Stick for eyes in Cocoa Bean for $6. Found at meetmark.com. I just love powder shadows and a velvety sheer plum is perfect for soft smoky eyes. Smudge the shadow with a smudge brush or your finger along the top and bottom lashes. Don't worry if it's not perfect, that's the whole idea. Benefit has a beautiful shadow in Gimme Me Some Plum and so does Urban Decay, both found at Sephora. Mousse shadows are perfect for humid climate. The reasoning behind the fact is because most formulas are water resistance. Look for a dusky iridescent shadow, spread against lid up to crease. Viola! Utterly flattering and chic! WARNING: Color will change in light so do not freak out!

Let me know if you need more tips to wearing the plum taupe trend or if you rocked the look, how it went and if you are now following the Plum Mushroom who wears Taupe.

Dreaming of Romeo and Juliet

I always end up dressing for my mood, and I can say that's pretty common for others as well. Today, well I guess I should say tonight I want the airiness of Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Daines in the beloved modern take of Romeo and Juliet. Remember her gorgeous white silk and chiffon gown she wore to the Capulet Ball? That is the airiness I am talking about. Think soft cotton ruffle tops worn with dark jeans and feminine printed satin flats. The pieces should not be dark, they should be very light pastel colors. Charles Albert has amazing printed paisley flats from endless.com. If you are going on vacation or have any special events coming up, save up your pennies because this piece is costly, but so worth it. BCBG Max Azria Silk Crinkle Chiffon Dress in white is breath taking. I am going to Las Vegas in April for my birthday and I am planning a day around that dress! This dress in white is not for the curvy, the empire was cut is right, but the color will not be flattering. I would go for a navy blue and add airy accessories. For instance, add a vintage beaded silk antique frame bag, or a long necklace that has wing charms on it.

Here's The Dress!!

Here is a picture from New Year's Eve of my Husband and I. That is the purple dress and the chain link necklace.

North vs. South

I was recently on both the North side and South side Thursday and Friday of this past week, and I happened to see some great places to shop. You can defiantly find bargains in both places, but use your keen eye and bartering skills. I love antique picture frames (so does my Mom and my Aunt Christine) and The Painted Lady on 2130 N. Damen Ave has gorgeous wood frames. The best part, they are not over-priced. I am always raving about costume jewelry and LuLu's at the Belle Kay has immensely elegant pieces that date back to the Victorian era. You can find this hot spot at 3862 N. Lincoln Ave.

Party Like It's 1983

I am sure all you glamorous girls are wondering what I wore for New Year's Eve. Well, if I must say so myself, I went for purple and sequins. My two favorites! It really went with the 80's revival trend this season. To help get a complete understanding of the trend (no big hair or electric blue eye shadow) I am going to explain thoroughly. This trend went a little more rock than disco. Think of metallic leathers, acid wash jeans, crystal studded mini dresses, and asymmetry. Sequin dresses with exaggerated shoulders look amazing (seen many on the North side that night). Deep necklines also look good, just watch the cleavage, you don't want to look cheap (seen a lot of that on the North side as well, maybe that's why I was throwing up in a cup! Ha! Just teasing!). I also love the one sleeve sweater dresses. A comfy and dressy way to be sexy. Asymmetrical dresses can be a great way to play up your assets, like legs or arms, maybe even your back. Because the cut of the dress is not even, the eyes are drawn to the dress (and hot body), so if you are a little body conscious, go for a dark color like plum, black, navy, etc. Sequin blazers with jeans look so chic, I just love the look! Forever 21 has awesome sequin pieces, just make sure to hand wash the items, because sequins will fall off in the washing machine.

Since we understand how this 80's trend works, I can explain what I wore. I wore a purple mini dress with 3/4 sleeves. The dress had thick horizontal sequin stripes going across the front. To rock it out, I wore a large silver chain link collar necklace that had little beads at the ends. I layered silver, black, and purple bangles and a silver cuff on my wrists. To tie it all together I wore black textured tights and stiletto patent pumps. Not to mention I wore gray shadow with tons of glitter. I will have pictures of me from that night uploaded as soon as my husband finds our camera! The dress was from Forever 21, tights from Kmart, necklace from Wal-Mart, bangles from Charlotte Russe as well as the cuff, and patent pumps are from Victoria Secrets.

Up top is a similar dress to what I wore, but like I said, mine was all purple and had sleeves.

Resolutions!

New Year's Resolutions are a nice thought, but do you ever really follow through? This year why not make some resolutions you can keep: shop smarter, style better (and for less), look utterly fabulous anytime and all the time. My resolution is to help sharpen your shopping, make clothes work for your body, and help you look amazing without that unnecessary extra cost. Here are some of my favorite New Year's Resolution Mannerisms:
